    ALGERNON CHARLES SWINBURNE (), English poet and critic, was born in London on the 5th of April He was the son of Admiral Charles Henry Swinburne (of an old Northumbrian family) and of Lady Jane Henrietta, a daughter of George, 3rd earl of Ashburnham.   Algernon Charles Swinburne ( - ) was an English poet, playwright, novelist, and critic. He wrote several novels, and contributed to the famous Eleventh Edition of the Encyclopædia Britannica.
